  15. <p>     DIED. JEROME LEJEUNE, 67, French geneticist; of lung cancer;
  16. in Paris. In 1959 Lejeune produced a landmark paper that traced
  17. the origins of the mental and physical handicaps of Down syndrome
  18. to an extra chromosome in those who have the condition. A vocal
  19. opponent of abortion, Lejeune was selected by Pope John Paul
  20. II to head the recently formed antiabortion Pontifical Academy
  21. for Life.
